In the city centre alone you will find more than 20 different cafes, around 10 fast-food restaurants, and approximately 25 further restaurants, together with self-service dining at some prominent department stores, such as Debenhams and Dingles, both of which are located along the Royal Parade. Many of the city's eateries serve traditional cream teas, with scones and clotted cream from the West Country.

Most cafes, fast-food restaurants and sandwich bars are open throughout the day, being especially busy at lunchtimes. Popular choices include Pizza Hut along the Royal Parade, Cafe Rouge on Whimple Street, the Pasta and Pizza Bar on Market Avenue, and the Ocean Palace along the Western Approach.

Burger chains generally stay open until 22:00 or later, while restaurants opening for evening dinner tend to open their doors anytime between 17:00 to 19:00, often closing in the early hours of the morning.

Many of the city's top restaurants are located in the very centre of Plymouth, including plenty of fine dining and lunchtime buffets. Further eateries are concentrated in the Barbican and Hoe area, where waterfront venues are especially popular.

The nearby Dartmoor area contains more than its fair share of restaurants and pub food, while the eastern and northern sides of the city are also popular places to eat out, with the Barbican Leisure Park containing a number of dining options, such as southern-style cuisine at Old Orleans, fast-food at the Plymouth Megabowl, and a restaurant and bar at the popular Ski Centre.
